                         Our Story

Our story with the German Shepherd began generations ago — not as breeders, but as true enthusiasts of the breed. Each new generation in our family was accompanied by a loyal German Shepherd puppy. For my grandparents, their Shepherds were first and foremost family members, and second, dedicated workers. Whether protecting livestock on their farms or watching over their children, their German Shepherds embodied loyalty, intelligence, and courage.

After the civil war in their homeland, my grandparents migrated to the United States. Despite the many challenges of adjusting to a new country, one of my grandfather’s greatest concerns was finding a quality German Shepherd. As a child, I couldn’t understand his disdain for pet shops. The idea of a dog confined to a “box” was perplexing to him, but he would always say, “They are destroying that dog.”

Rejecting the pet shop approach, my grandparents often spent weekends driving across the East Coast in search of reputable breeders. My grandfather, though not an expert by official standards, could recognize purity in a German Shepherd. His eye was always drawn to a dog’s drive, hips, and shoulders. He preferred an eight-month-old puppy over an eight-week-old one, believing that the German Shepherd was not just a pet, but a steward of the home and family.

In the mountains of the old country, a German Shepherd that was not clear in the head would not survive — it was truly a matter of life or death. That natural selection forged a breed both noble and intelligent, traits that my family has always revered.

My own love for the German Shepherd deepened during adolescence, when I witnessed the Massachusetts State Police train their Shepherds for drug detection. At the time, my father owned the contracts to the Boston Transportation Department’s towing lot, where officers would bring their dogs to search vehicles for hidden contraband. Watching these Shepherds adapt effortlessly to an urban environment — so different from the farms of my grandparents’ time — only strengthened my belief that the German Shepherd is, without question, the most remarkable breed in the world.

Today, we are attempting to create that legacy through Vom Haus Steinmauer. Our breeding program is built on the same values passed down through generations — integrity, respect for the breed, and an unwavering commitment to producing sound-minded, structurally excellent German Shepherds. Each dog we raise carries forward a lineage rooted in tradition and purpose, embodying the timeless standard that first inspired my family: a loyal protector, a noble companion, and a true steward of the home.

Our Program

Home being the emphasis.  Our dogs are truly family members, from the food they are fed to the open communication with our vet during pregnancy.  Our program is young and our litters are carefully planned with the consultation of a veterinary Theriogenologist.  The safety and health of our expecting females are a priority.  We create an environment where the mother is never in a confined space or left alone.  This is not a criticism on any other program.  Our program fortunately has the ability to provide a low stress environment with open space to expecting mothers.
